The Yangwang U9 Breaks Electric Car Speed Record, Reaching Nearly 300mph
The Yangwang U9, boasting an impressive 2977bhp, has made history by achieving a top speed of almost 300mph, setting a new record for electric cars. The official speed of 293.54mph was recorded at the ATP test track in Germany, surpassing the previous record of 272.61mph set by the Aspark Owl.
This remarkable feat was accomplished by the Track Edition variant of the Chinese supercar, which features four motors each producing 744bhp. With a total power output of 1689bhp higher than the standard model, the top-rung U9 can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 2.36 seconds.
One of the key factors contributing to this record-breaking performance is the car’s independent torque-vectoring system, which is controlled by road-monitoring sensors to adjust each motor up to 100 times per second for optimal grip and performance.
Additionally, the U9 was equipped with special semi-slick tires developed by Giti Tire, specifically designed to minimize torque loss and wear, enhancing the car’s overall performance.
Renowned German professional driver Marc Basseng, who also drove the U9 in a previous attempt in 2024, achieved a speed of 243mph, setting the stage for the recent record-breaking run. Basseng expressed his surprise at breaking his own record so soon and credited the new technologies that made it possible.
Owned by the automotive giant BYD, Yangwang is known for producing technology-driven, high-performance models. In addition to the U9, the brand offers the robust U8 SUV in China, with prices starting from approximately £120,000 and £200,000.
Exciting plans are in motion to introduce the Yangwang brand to the European market, as revealed by BYD vice-president Stella Li. The brand’s European debut will follow the launch of the Denza brand, which is set to rival Audi and is scheduled to hit the market early next year.
