BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. (BBA) recently celebrated a significant milestone at its Plant Dadong in Shenyang Province, China. The joint venture between BMW Group and Brilliance Auto announced that the plant had exceeded a cumulative production of 3.5 million vehicles since its opening in 2003. This facility, which was BMW’s first manufacturing base in China, has become a crucial part of the brand’s local operations and has witnessed continuous advancements in production technology over the past two decades.
One of the highlights of this achievement is the locally built BMW 5 Series surpassing the 2-million-unit mark in cumulative production. The BMW 5 Series has established itself as a top-tier model in China’s premium executive sedan segment, combining performance and luxury to become one of BMW’s most successful models in the country. The 3.5 millionth vehicle produced at Plant Dadong was a BMW 5 Series Shadow Edition, affectionately known as the “Black Warrior”.
The success of Plant Dadong can be attributed to its cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities. Thomas Michel, the director of the plant, emphasized the importance of delivering products with “zero defects”. To achieve this goal, the plant has implemented full-process digitalization and an AI-driven production system that acts as the plant’s “nervous system”.
Central to this system is the AI Quality Next (AIQX) platform, a visual inspection tool that covers more than 30 production stations. AIQX uses high-resolution cameras and cloud-based AI algorithms to monitor manufacturing processes in real-time, detect potential defects, and provide immediate feedback. This meticulous monitoring ensures precision from the initial order creation to the final assembly of the vehicle.
Plant Dadong has also raised the bar for paint quality, a key aspect of premium craftsmanship. Each BMW 5 Series vehicle undergoes rigorous data collection of over 100,000 images to analyze surface light and shadow before delivery. The AI system continues to refine production processes during off-hours, improving quality over time.
Despite the plant’s success, BMW faced challenges in the Chinese market in 2024, with a decline in sales and exports. To maintain its luxury positioning in China, BMW is focusing on upgrading manufacturing processes at Plant Dadong. With the appointment of Birgit Böhm-Wannenwetsch as CEO of BBA and the Shenyang production hub on track to achieve a total output of 5 million units this year, BMW is committed to its BMW iFACTORY strategy. By enhancing lean, green, and digitalized production, BMW aims to drive its local transformation and navigate the changing landscape of the automotive industry.
