Bespoke platform but traditional looks for Mercedes ‘Mini G-Class’

The New Baby Mercedes-Benz G-Class: A Closer Look

The highly anticipated ‘baby’ Mercedes-Benz G-Class is set to make its debut within the next two years, boasting a slew of unique features and a design that promises to be even more modern than its predecessor. According to company executives, the new SUV will be built on a bespoke ‘ladder-frame’ platform, utilizing “nearly all unique” components to set it apart from other models in the lineup.

Mercedes is aiming to position the new G-Class as the entry model into a growing range, with plans to expand the G-Class brand similar to how JLR has transformed Range Rover into a standalone brand. As part of this strategy, the iconic G-Class Cabriolet will also be making a comeback, as announced recently.

During a presentation at the Munich motor show, Mercedes chairman Ola Källenius provided a glimpse of what’s to come, revealing that test mules of the new SUV will hit the roads soon. He also showcased a preview image of the rear end of the upcoming model, hinting at the design direction.

One of the key highlights of the new Mini G is its unique architecture, as confirmed by tech boss Markus Schäfer. In order to maintain the authenticity of the G-Class heritage, the Mini G will sit on a specially developed platform, described as a “miniature ladder-frame chassis.” This bespoke platform will ensure that the Mini G stays true to the G-Class DNA.

Schäfer emphasized the importance of utilizing unique components for the Mini G, stating that the car will feature “a lot” of exclusive parts, including most of the bodywork. He explained, “Everything has to be unique, the whole upper body and everything. We spent a lot of time tuning this car to ensure it’s both visually appealing and capable.”

While the current G-Class is available with both combustion and electric powertrains, the Mini G is expected to be offered exclusively as an electric vehicle. When asked about powertrain options, Schäfer remained tight-lipped, teasing, “Stay tuned. I don’t want to go into this detail just yet.”

With its unique platform, bespoke components, and modern design, the new baby Mercedes-Benz G-Class is poised to make a strong statement in the SUV market. Keep an eye out for more updates as Mercedes gears up for the official launch of this highly anticipated model.
