China’s electric vehicle (EV) market has been on the rise in the first half of 2025, with domestic brands taking the lead. According to data from EV Volumes, the market saw a 40.5% growth, with a total of 5,959,048 plug-in vehicles delivered between January and June.
BEVs accounted for 58.7% of the total volume, showing an increase of 1.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, PHEVs made up the remaining 41.3% of deliveries.
While the growth in the second quarter was slower compared to the first three months of 2025, the total volume saw an improvement. A total of 3,330,228 units were delivered in the second quarter, marking a 37.2% increase from the same period in 2024.
Domestic brands continued to dominate the Chinese EV market, with little change in the top four positions from the first quarter. BYD led the market, with a significant increase in EV deliveries. The brand maintained its lead, with over 1.5 million units hitting the roads between January and June.
Geely secured the second spot in the market, with a notable increase in plug-in sales. Wuling, in collaboration with Baojung, held onto the third position, showing a strong performance in the first half of the year.
However, Tesla faced challenges in the market, slipping to the fourth position in 2025. The brand recorded a decline in deliveries, losing ground to other domestic carmakers.
Other Chinese brands like Chery, Leapmotor, Li Auto, and Xpeng also saw fluctuations in their positions in the top 10. Xiaomi experienced significant growth in deliveries, climbing to the 10th spot in the market.
Overall, the Chinese EV market continues to evolve, with domestic brands leading the way and international players facing stiff competition. As the market expands, it will be interesting to see how different brands adapt and innovate to maintain their positions in this rapidly growing sector.
