Kia has recently announced the commencement of production for its first all-electric vehicle designed specifically for the European market, the EV4 hatchback. This milestone is a significant step for the automaker as it enters the electric vehicle market with a dedicated model.
The production of the EV4 hatchback is taking place at Kia’s manufacturing hub in Slovakia, known as Kia AutoLand Slovakia. The facility in Zilina has undergone extensive upgrades to its production lines in order to accommodate the manufacturing of the EV4. Kia has invested €108 million in modernizing the plant with new technologies, including an EV battery conveyor system.
The EV4 is built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of Hyundai Motor, offering customers the choice between two battery sizes: a standard 58.3kWh and a larger 81.4kWh option. The vehicle was first unveiled in February 2025, showcasing both saloon and hatchback variants.
One of the standout features of the EV4 is its energy capabilities, including vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionalities. Additionally, the EV4 boasts a lightweight aluminum bonnet and is available in eight exterior colors with a matte finish.
The Zilina plant plays a crucial role in Kia’s European strategy, employing approximately 3,700 individuals and spanning 2km². In addition to the EV4, the facility manufactures other models such as the Kia Sportage and Kia XCeed, including their hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. With an annual production capacity of 350,000 vehicles and 540,000 engines, the Zilina plant has produced over five million units since its opening in 2004.
Kia’s foray into electric vehicles comes at a time when the company is experiencing strong financial performance. In the second quarter of 2025, Kia reported a 6.5% increase in revenues to a record Won29.35tn, driven by robust global demand for its hybrid models, higher average selling prices, and favorable currency exchange rates.
Overall, Kia’s production of the EV4 hatchback marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards electrification and sustainable mobility. With a focus on innovation and technological advancements, Kia is poised to make a mark in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
