The Rebirth of the Volvo XC70: A Long-Range Plug-In Hybrid SUV
The Volvo XC70 has been transformed into a ‘long-range’ plug-in hybrid SUV that can travel over 124 miles on electric power alone.
This new vehicle will be positioned below the XC90 in Volvo’s lineup, drawing design inspiration from its larger sibling and the electric EX90.
Initially launched in China, Volvo has plans to bring the XC70 to Europe in the future, catering to customers who are hesitant to fully transition to electric vehicles.
Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson views the XC70 as a crucial addition to the brand’s electrified product range, serving as a cornerstone of their commitment to electrification.
While specific technical details have not been disclosed, it is confirmed that the XC70 is built on Volvo’s Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, optimized for long-range plug-in hybrid powertrains.
On the Chinese CLTC test cycle, the XC70 can achieve 124 miles of electric-only range, with a total range exceeding 745 miles when combining petrol and electric power sources.
Notably, the XC70 supports fast-charging, allowing the battery to reach 80% capacity in just 23 minutes and offers bi-directional charging capability.
According to filings with the Chinese government, the XC70 will combine a 160bhp 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor powered by either a 21.2kWh or 39.64kWh battery.
Measuring 4815mm in length and 1890mm in width, the XC70 competes closely with the dimensions of the BMW X5.
Featuring Volvo’s latest design language, the XC70 showcases a modern interpretation of the brand’s signature aesthetics, including a closed front grille and active grille shutter for improved aerodynamics and cooling.
Inside, the XC70 boasts a 12-inch digital instrument display, a 15.4-inch touchscreen similar to the EX90, and an optional 9.1-inch augmented reality head-up display.
Production of the XC70 has commenced in China, with pre-orders now open for interested customers. While a European launch timeline has not been specified, Volvo enthusiasts can expect the XC70 to make its way to European markets in the near future.
