The Renault Rafale E-Tech may not be the fastest car on the block, but it certainly makes up for it in other areas. With a hybrid setup producing 197bhp, this 1.7-tonne vehicle may not win any drag races with its 0-62mph sprint time of 8.9sec, but it offers a unique driving experience nonetheless.

The Rafale’s hybrid system is a bit unconventional, with the engine starting off in electric mode before kicking in to provide additional power. This setup can make acceleration feel a bit sluggish, but once the petrol engine is engaged, the car performs admirably. The gearbox has been updated to provide smoother shifts, although there is still a noticeable delay between ratios.

One of the standout features of the Rafale is its plug-in hybrid drivetrain, which sets it apart from other Renault models. With three auxiliary motors distributed throughout the driveline, the Rafale boasts a total output of 296bhp, allowing for a 0-62mph time of 6.4sec. This unique setup provides a good balance of power and efficiency, making the Rafale a versatile choice for drivers.

In terms of handling, the Rafale benefits from its four-wheel-drive system, with the rear motor providing extra traction and agility. This setup allows for improved acceleration and handling, making the Rafale a joy to drive in various conditions. Whether cruising on the motorway or navigating city streets, the Rafale offers a comfortable and engaging driving experience.

The Rafale’s different driving modes, including Comfort and Sport, cater to a variety of driving preferences. In Comfort mode, the car can run on pure EV power for a quiet and efficient ride, while Sport mode unleashes the full 296bhp for a more spirited driving experience. While the petrol engine may sound a bit strained under heavy acceleration, the overall performance of the Rafale is impressive.

Overall, the Renault Rafale E-Tech is a unique and versatile plug-in hybrid that offers a blend of power, efficiency, and handling. With its innovative drivetrain and various driving modes, the Rafale is a standout choice for drivers looking for a balance of performance and practicality.
