The New Renault Twingo Electric Car Coming to the UK
The highly anticipated new Renault Twingo electric car is set to arrive in the UK in right-hand-drive form shortly after its launch next year. Fabrice Cambolive, the firm’s boss, has confirmed that the fourth generation of the model will be available for purchase in mainland Europe with a starting price of sub-€20,000 (£16,700).
There were initial doubts about the UK release of the new Twingo due to the costs associated with converting it to right-hand drive. However, Cambolive has reassured customers that the model will indeed be making its way to the UK market. This decision was influenced by the positive reception of Renault’s other iconic models like the Renault 5 and 4 in the UK.
Speaking about the UK market, Cambolive stated, “The UK is very important in terms of product recognition, because your legacy in terms of cars is very important. I’ve followed closely the reaction to the R5 and R4 [in the UK], and with Twingo the exercise will be even more interesting because it’s not only sportiness, agility, design, and practicality but we can play on versatility.”
The new Twingo is positioned as a versatile solution for mobility in the UK market, offering a blend of sportiness, agility, and practicality. Cambolive expressed his commitment to bringing the Twingo to the UK as soon as possible after its launch in mainland Europe.
Despite the challenges in making the business case work for the UK release, Renault is determined to offer the Twingo to British customers. The confirmation of Renault producing an electric city car based on the Twingo for Nissan has likely helped in bolstering the case for the UK release.
When discussing the business case, Cambolive noted, “It’s a challenge. We have to be very accessible when we speak about B-segment cars. Each time we are adding diversity and cost, it’s a kind of trade-off we have to do. But when I look at the strong start of sales of R5 in the UK, I don’t want to miss the opportunity to launch Twingo in the UK.”
