Tesla’s Cybertruck Discontinued: A Commercial Flop

Tesla’s Cybertruck, which was once hailed as a groundbreaking electric pickup truck, has hit a major roadblock in its journey to success. The company has recently discontinued the cheapest version of the Cybertruck, just a few months after its launch, due to lackluster sales.

The Cybertruck, which Tesla claimed had over 1 million reservations, was expected to have a production capacity of up to 250,000 units per year, with a potential increase to 500,000 units per year. However, the reality is far from these lofty expectations, as Tesla is currently selling the Cybertruck at a rate of roughly 20,000 units per year.

The primary reason for the Cybertruck’s poor performance in the market is attributed to its high price and underwhelming specifications compared to what was initially promised. In an attempt to address this issue, Tesla introduced a more affordable version of the electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck rear-wheel-drive, in April 2025. However, this move backfired as the stripped-down version lacked essential features such as active air suspension, a motorized tonneau cover, and power outlets in the bed.

Less than 5 months after the launch of the Cybertruck RWD, Tesla has decided to discontinue the model. The automaker has removed the option from its online configurator, signaling the end of the road for the unpopular variant.

Looking ahead, the future of the Cybertruck remains uncertain. With sales hovering around the 20,000 unit mark, Tesla may need to rethink its strategy for the electric pickup truck. One possibility is to introduce upgrades to bring the Cybertruck closer to its original promises and generate more demand from potential buyers.

In conclusion, the Cybertruck’s discontinuation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Tesla in the highly competitive electric vehicle market. Despite initial hype and anticipation, the reality of commercial success has proven to be more elusive for the Cybertruck. Only time will tell if Tesla can turn the tide and revive the fortunes of its once-promising electric pickup truck.
