Tesla continues to tease the highly anticipated new Roadster, which has been delayed for five years and counting. The electric car company is positioning the Roadster as “the last driver’s car” before self-driving technology completely takes over the automotive industry.
Initially unveiled in 2017, the next-generation Tesla Roadster was slated for production in 2020. However, it has faced continuous delays since then. The Roadster was promised to have an impressive range of 620 miles (1,000 km) and an acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds.
Despite Tesla’s promises of free Roadsters to participants in its referral program and deposits ranging from $50,000 to $250,000, the vehicle has yet to hit the market. CEO Elon Musk described the Roadster as a “halo car” that would outperform traditional gasoline vehicles, but the delays have cast doubt on its eventual release.
Tesla has attributed the delays to ongoing improvements and the addition of features like the “SpaceX package,” which reportedly includes cold air thrusters for flying capabilities. However, skeptics remain unconvinced as Tesla has failed to deliver on its promises for five consecutive years.
During a recent interview at the X Takeover event, Tesla’s head of vehicle engineering, Lars Moravy, referred to the next-gen Roadster as the “last best driver’s car.” He mentioned showcasing some exciting new technology to Elon Musk, hinting at a potential demo in the near future.
While Musk has previously hyped up Roadster demos in 2019 and 2024 that never materialized, there is renewed speculation about a possible unveiling. The Roadster is seen as a significant milestone for Tesla, representing a shift towards fully autonomous vehicles.
As Tesla faces mounting pressure to deliver on its promises, the Roadster stands as a pivotal test for the company’s credibility. With advancements in electric hypercars since the Roadster’s initial unveiling, Tesla must update the vehicle to remain competitive in the evolving market.
The fate of the next-generation Tesla Roadster hangs in the balance as enthusiasts eagerly await its long-awaited release. Will Tesla finally deliver on its promises and redefine the future of electric sports cars? Only time will tell.
