The Eastern US’s first CFI-funded EV charging hub comes online

The town of Deerfield, Massachusetts has recently unveiled the first EV charging hub in the Eastern US funded by the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Program. Located at 59 North Main Street in South Deerfield, the hub features four DC fast chargers and four Level 2 chargers, catering to drivers from Connecticut up to the Canadian border. This strategic location near Interstate 91 in Franklin County, the most rural county in Massachusetts, aims to serve a wide range of users, including local residents, visitors, municipal EVs, and commercial vehicles that support businesses in the region, such as those in food and beverage manufacturing.

Gabe Klein, executive director of the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, commended the initiative, stating that multi-modal charging hubs in communities are essential in promoting electric transportation options. The project in Deerfield is seen as a model for future endeavors, showcasing convenient charging infrastructure that benefits rural and disadvantaged communities while supporting local commerce.

In addition to promoting electric vehicle usage, the project in Deerfield also addresses environmental concerns. The town has experienced increased flooding due to climate change-driven events from nearby rivers. To mitigate these effects, the charging hub incorporates environmental engineering features such as permeable asphalt, rain gardens, native trees, grasses, and shrubs, as well as the creation of new greenspace in the town center.

The CFI Grant Program, spearheaded by the Biden-Harris administration, is playing a vital role in expanding EV infrastructure nationwide. With over $1 billion allocated to nearly 100 projects across the US, the program aims to encourage private investments and enhance the EV charging network, making electric vehicle ownership more practical and convenient for all.
