VinFast Auto, a Vietnamese battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufacturer, has officially opened its new assembly plant in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This marks the company’s third vehicle assembly facility globally, showcasing its commitment to global expansion.
The inauguration ceremony for the plant, located in the Sipcot Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, signifies a significant milestone for VinFast. The company recently launched its first showroom in India and started taking bookings for its VF6 and VF7 models, which were unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in Delhi earlier this year.
VinFast’s decision to establish a plant in India reflects its long-term commitment to the country’s automobile market and its confidence in India’s strategic role in the global EV industry. With existing plants in Vietnam and a facility under construction in Indonesia, VinFast’s expansion into India demonstrates its capacity to deliver large-scale projects.
The Tamil Nadu plant spans across a 400-acre plot and has an initial production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year. The facility boasts state-of-the-art production lines that meet world-class standards, featuring advanced automation and cutting-edge technologies. It includes workshops for body assembly, painting, final assembly, quality control, and logistics, as well as an auxiliary cluster for local contractors.
At full capacity, the plant is expected to employ up to 3,500 people directly, with additional jobs created indirectly within the supply chain ecosystem. The production capacity can be scaled up to 150,000 vehicles annually to meet increasing demand. This move brings VinFast closer to its 2025 sales target of 200,000 vehicles globally and its goal of producing 1 million vehicles per year by 2030.
During the inauguration ceremony, VinFast Asia’s CEO, Pham Sanh Chau, highlighted the plant’s strategic importance in the Indian market. He emphasized the company’s commitment to offering high-quality, competitively priced electric vehicles to Indian consumers and expanding production capacity to meet growing demand. The company aims to develop the facility into its largest export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
VinFast has already secured initial orders from several countries in these regions and is collaborating with the Tamil Nadu government to transform the area into the “EV capital of South Asia.” This initiative supports both the domestic market and VinFast’s broader regional aspirations, positioning the company as a key player in the global EV industry.
In conclusion, VinFast’s inauguration of the Tamil Nadu plant signifies a significant step in its global expansion strategy and solidifies its presence in the Indian market. With a focus on high-quality EV production and sustainable growth, VinFast is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive industry in the years to come.
