Volkswagen Unveils Trio of Concept Cars Ahead of Shanghai Motor Show
Volkswagen has recently revealed three exciting concept cars ahead of the Shanghai motor show, signaling a significant expansion of its offerings in the Chinese market. These new vehicles, developed in collaboration with SAIC, FAW, and Volkswagen’s Anhui division, are set to lead a 30-model lineup that will be introduced in China over the next two years.
The highlight of the trio is the ID Era, a seven-seat SUV developed with SAIC that previews Volkswagen’s first car with a range-extender powertrain. This innovative vehicle combines a petrol generator with a battery-electric powertrain, offering a remarkable range of over 621 miles (1000km) when both the fuel tank and battery are fully charged.
Another SUV in the lineup is the ID Evo, created by Volkswagen Anhui as a counterpart to the ID Unyx. While the ID Unyx is based on the Cupra Tavascan with a sporty design, the ID Evo features a more traditional hatchback silhouette. It boasts an 800V electrical system and a new zonal computer setup that enables various digital services and quick software updates.
The final model, FAW-Volkswagen’s ID Aura, is a compact notchback saloon reminiscent of the classic Bora. Targeted towards buyers interested in affordable city cars, the ID Aura is the first vehicle built on the new Compact Main Platform (CMP) specifically tailored for the Chinese market.

Although Volkswagen has not disclosed detailed information about the powertrains of these concept cars, it has confirmed that all three models are categorized as new-energy vehicles (NEVs) in accordance with Chinese regulations, encompassing plug-in hybrids, range-extender EVs, and battery EVs.
