2024 BMW XM Review: Prices, Specs, and Photos

The BMW XM is a plug-in hybrid SUV that offers impressive performance on the highway but falls short in urban driving conditions. With a powerful drivetrain and all-wheel drive system, the XM delivers a thrilling driving experience, but it comes with a few drawbacks that may not be suitable for everyone.

The XM is equipped with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine paired with an electric motor and a 25.7-kwh battery pack, producing a total output of 644 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain allows the XM to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. For those looking for even more performance, BMW offers the XM Label model with 738 hp, enabling a quicker acceleration time of 3.7 seconds and a higher top speed of up to 175 mph.

One of the standout features of the XM is its plug-in hybrid system, which allows for up to 31 miles of all-electric driving and a top speed of 87 mph in EV mode. Additionally, the XM is equipped with different driving modes, including Hybrid, Electric, and Sport, to suit a variety of driving conditions.

However, despite its impressive performance capabilities, the XM struggles with urban driving. The Hybrid mode, which blends electric and gas power, can be frustrating to use at lower speeds, with a brake-hold feature that can be jerky and an annoying programmed EV noise that cannot be edited out. The XM also defaults to a sport exhaust that may become tiresome after extended periods of driving.

Furthermore, the XM’s ride quality suffers at slower speeds, particularly on uneven surfaces. The SUV’s hefty curb weight and large wheels contribute to a bumpy and uncomfortable ride, especially when trying to conserve energy in battery mode. However, once on the highway, the XM’s performance shines through, with a smoother and more refined driving experience.

In conclusion, the BMW XM offers impressive performance and a unique plug-in hybrid system, but it may not be the best choice for urban driving. Its dual-personality nature may appeal to some drivers, but others may find its quirks and drawbacks to be off-putting. Ultimately, the XM excels on the highway but falls short in urban paces, earning it an 8 out of 10 for its acceleration and ride quality.
