Denza, the luxury offshoot of Chinese brand BYD, is gearing up to enter the Australian market with its new offering, the Denza D9. This people mover is set to compete with popular models like the Kia Carnival, Zeekr 009, and Lexus LM. The D9 comes with some high-tech powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid model called the DM-i.
Although there is no official confirmation of the Denza D9’s arrival in Australia, it is priced between 339,800 and 600,600 yuan in China, which translates to approximately A$72,750 to $128,500. The model available in China is the DM-i plug-in hybrid, but there is also a fully electric version. If the D9 does make its way to Australia, it is likely to be the plug-in hybrid model initially, targeting the market segment above high-spec Carnival hybrids but below six-figure EV MPVs like the Zeekr 009 and Lexus LM.
The D9 boasts a range of standard features and luxurious touches. Inside, there are screens aplenty, with a 10.25-inch instrument display for the driver and a 15.6-inch central touchscreen for controls. The cabin is plush and comfortable, with leather-trimmed seats, climate control for all three rows, and a host of high-tech amenities. The second-row captain’s chairs offer a premium experience, with features like wireless charging, USB-C ports, and individual touchscreens.
While the interior of the Denza D9 is luxurious, practicality may be a concern for potential buyers. The 2+2+3 seating layout means that accessing the third row requires maneuvering between the captain’s chairs, unlike the more straightforward fold-down setup of models like the Carnival. However, rear passengers are treated to amenities like cup holders, USB ports, and even seat heating and cooling.
Under the bonnet, the Denza D9 DM-i boasts a 1.5L 4cyl turbo-petrol engine paired with electric motors, delivering a combined output of 299kW and 681Nm. The model also features a 40.06kWh battery pack, e-CVT transmission, and dual-motor AWD system. The electric version of the D9 offers even more power and range, with a 103.36kWh battery and outputs of 275kW and 470Nm.
In terms of safety, the Denza D9 comes equipped with a range of advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous driving features, and a comprehensive array of sensors and cameras. The model also features multiple airbags and other standard safety equipment.
Overall, the Denza D9 presents a compelling option for families and fleet customers looking for a premium people mover with high-tech features and a luxurious interior. With competitive pricing and a strong warranty offering, the D9 could make a significant impact in the Australian market.
