Geely, the Chinese auto giant, is gearing up to launch its first Geely-branded vehicle in Australia in 2025. The Geely EX5, a mid-sized electric SUV, is set to make a mark in the mainstream market segment. While the finer details are still being finalized, a recent test drive of the EX5 in China has revealed some promising features that could make it a strong competitor in the electric vehicle market.

Geely’s Presence in Australia

Geely already has a significant presence in Australia through its ownership of carmakers like Volvo, Polestar, smart, Zeekr, and Lotus. However, the Geely brand itself has not been represented on Australian roads until now. The EX5 aims to fill that gap and offer a mass-market electric SUV option to Australian consumers.

Design and Features

The Geely EX5 boasts a sleek design with a large multimedia display, digital instrument cluster, and premium finishes throughout the cabin. The interior offers a range of color choices and high-quality materials. The electric SUV comes equipped with features like electrically adjustable front seats with heating, cooling, and massage functions, a touchscreen media system, ambient interior lighting, and a panoramic glass roof.

Performance and Battery

The EX5 is available with two different battery capacity options internationally, but it is expected that the larger 60.2kWh pack will be offered in Australia. The electric SUV is powered by a single-motor electric drivetrain producing 160kW and 320Nm of torque. It offers a claimed range of 425 kilometers on a full charge and supports fast charging capabilities.

Driving Experience

During a test drive in China, the Geely EX5 displayed a comfortable ride quality but lacked sharp cornering abilities due to its soft suspension setup. The steering was slow to respond, and the stability control system was overly intrusive. However, it is expected that the Australian-tuned version will address these issues and offer a more engaging driving experience.

Safety and Ownership

The Geely EX5 comes equipped with a range of safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and more. While official safety ratings are pending, the electric SUV is expected to meet the necessary safety standards. Additionally, details on warranty, servicing, and ownership costs are yet to be confirmed but are likely to be competitive within the market.

Conclusion

Overall, the Geely EX5 shows promise as a compelling electric SUV offering in the Australian market. With its stylish design, advanced features, and competitive performance, the EX5 could be a strong contender in the growing electric vehicle segment. Keep an eye out for the official pricing and specifications closer to the launch date in 2025.
