Jaecoo J7: A New Player in Australia’s Auto Market

It seems like every week, a new auto brand is making its debut in Australia. Along with this growth in the automotive industry, there has been a surge in technology advancements, particularly in the hybrid and electric vehicle sectors.

Recently, we had the opportunity to test drive one of the latest entrants, the Jaecoo J7 SHS plug-in hybrid, on a long-distance journey from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth in South Africa. Our goal was to determine if the J7 SHS could live up to its claim of a driving range of about 1200km on a single tank and charge.

Jaecoo J7 Specifications and Pricing

While the pricing for the Jaecoo J7 SHS in Australia has not been officially announced, it is expected to start below $50,000 drive-away. The J7 range in Australia is well-equipped, and it is likely that the SHS variant will come in a higher trim level, possibly the Track specification.

The interior of the Jaecoo J7 is a standout feature, offering premium finishes, a large infotainment display, digital cluster, ambient lighting, and more. The cabin rivals those of higher-priced German brands and provides a comfortable and luxurious driving experience.

Performance and Driving Experience

The J7 SHS is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 255kW and 525Nm. The vehicle offers a smooth and quiet ride, with impressive acceleration and efficiency figures. It can run entirely on electric power or switch between hybrid modes depending on driving conditions.

During our test drive, we found the J7 SHS to be zippy and responsive, though torque steer and steering feel could be improved. The vehicle performed well on long-distance drives, with minimal noise intrusion and comfortable handling on various road surfaces.

Safety and Features

The Jaecoo J7 comes equipped with advanced safety features, including airbags, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and more. The J7 Track variant adds additional safety features such as a driver’s knee airbag and surround-view cameras.

Conclusion

Our test drive of the Jaecoo J7 SHS proved that it can deliver on its promise of an impressive driving range and performance. The vehicle offers exceptional value for money, with a luxurious interior, efficient hybrid drivetrain, and advanced safety features. While there are areas for improvement, such as torque steer and steering feel, the overall package is compelling for those in the market for a plug-in hybrid vehicle.
