Lexus has finally entered the fully electric vehicle (EV) market with the introduction of the UX 300e in 2021. Following up on this, the company launched the larger RZ mid-size electric SUV two years later. The RZ shares its underpinnings with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, targeting premium electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y.
The updated Lexus RZ range has addressed several issues identified in the initial model, including power, range, and charging speeds. The new models also introduce innovative technology such as a steer-by-wire (SBW) system with a unique steering yoke and an Interactive Manual Drive feature aimed at simulating the experience of driving an internal combustion car.
During a press launch in Portugal, the revised RZ lineup impressed with its driving dynamics and improved performance. The RZ lineup in Australia includes the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive RZ 450e variant, available in Luxury and Sports Luxury trims. With the introduction of the 500e and 550e variants for 2025, pricing is expected to increase.
The RZ’s interior boasts a beautifully crafted cabin with high-quality materials and ample space for passengers. The infotainment system is user-friendly, with a large touchscreen display and crisp graphics. The addition of a steer-by-wire system with a unique steering yoke, however, received mixed reviews due to its unconventional design.
Under the bonnet, the RZ offers improved power outputs, with the 500e producing 280kW and the 550e 300kW. Both models feature a 77kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 500km on 18-inch wheels. The RZ lineup also boasts faster charging speeds and improved battery technology.
In terms of safety, the Lexus RZ received a full five-star ANCAP rating in 2023 and offers a range of passive and active safety features. The cost of running the RZ is significantly lower than a petrol-powered SUV, with capped-price servicing and an impressive warranty package.
Overall, the revised Lexus RZ lineup offers a compelling blend of luxury, performance, and technology. While some features like the SBW system and Interactive Manual Drive may not appeal to all drivers, the RZ 500e with conventional steering remains a solid choice in the luxury electric SUV segment.
