2025 Mitsubishi Outlander is still an outlier

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander has undergone some subtle changes from the previous model year, with a few tweaks to the design that make it stand out. The front end, in particular, features large headlights, surrounded by chrome accents and daytime running lamps. While some may find the design bold and attention-grabbing, others may prefer the sleek lines of competitors like the Kia Sportage or Hyundai Tucson.

Inside, the top trim SEL model offers a luxurious cabin with quilted leather seats in a rich Brick Brown color. While there are some plastic elements in the interior, it’s to be expected in this price range. The physical controls for the HVAC system and heated seats are a welcome feature, and the 12.3-inch touchscreen offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The SEL also comes equipped with a high-quality Yamaha stereo system with multiple speaker configurations and sound modes.

The 2025 Outlander excels in handling, thanks to its rally-style all-wheel-drive system. The suspension has been retuned for a comfortable ride, with drive modes for different road conditions. However, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine may feel underpowered compared to rivals, and the continuously variable transmission (CVT) can be noisy and buzzy.

Safety features include blind-spot monitors, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alerts. Higher trims offer additional features like active lane control and adaptive cruise control. The Outlander’s starting price of $31,140 is competitive with other midsize crossovers, but adding options can quickly increase the price. The top trim SEL with all the bells and whistles can reach $45,930, putting it in line with rival offerings.

Overall, the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander is a solid choice in the crowded midsize crossover segment. While it may not have the most powerful engine or the best fuel economy, its all-wheel-drive system and premium stereo make it a compelling option. For those interested in a more powerful and efficient option, the plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander may be worth waiting for, with 248 hp, 332 lb-ft of torque, and impressive fuel economy ratings.
