2025 Renault 4 E-Tech review: Quick drive

The Renault 4, whether the original 1961-1992 model or the modern electric recreation, poses an interesting question – is it a hatchback or an SUV? The answer is not immediately clear, as the Renault 4 has characteristics of both body styles.

The original Renault 4 is considered to be the first popular hatchback, boasting over eight million sales and being the best-selling Renault vehicle of all time. However, some argue that its long-travel suspension, boxy body, and off-road capabilities make it more of an SUV than a hatchback.

The modern electric Renault 4 E-Tech follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, blurring the lines between hatchback and SUV. With chunky styling, black plastic trim, and an upright stance similar to an SUV, it shares similarities with the Renault Captur in terms of height and ground clearance. However, its proportions and overall character lean more towards a hatchback.

Under the hood, the Renault 4 E-Tech features a 52kWh battery and a 110kW electric motor, providing a range of up to 409km. It offers decent performance, with a 0-100km/h time of 8.3 seconds and a one-pedal braking system for low-speed driving.

Inside, the Renault 4 E-Tech offers a spacious interior with a 10-inch touchscreen, digital instrument panel, and single-zone climate control. The rear seats provide ample space for passengers, and the boot offers 420 litres of cargo capacity, expandable to 880 litres with the rear seats folded.

In terms of safety, the Renault 4 E-Tech comes equipped with features such as forward collision warning, lane centring, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. It has not yet been tested by safety organizations like ANCAP or Euro NCAP.

Overall, the Renault 4 E-Tech may not have the immediate appeal of its sibling, the Renault 5 E-Tech, but it offers a unique blend of hatchback and SUV characteristics. With a focus on design details, rewarding driving experience, and efficient electric powertrain, the Renault 4 E-Tech is a compelling option for those in the market for an electric vehicle.
