Volvo is issuing a recall for 2,061 EX90 electric SUVs due to a software error that could impact the normal functioning of their headlights. The affected vehicles were introduced for the 2025 model year, with some of the earliest units potentially having incorrect software programming for their low power control units. This error could cause the headlights to undergo a “reference run” while driving, resulting in shutters closing over the low- and high-beam elements.
The shutters, where the EX90’s daytime running lights are located, are designed to remain open while driving to ensure proper illumination of the road ahead. If the shutters close unexpectedly, visibility will be compromised, increasing the risk of a nighttime collision. Only vehicles manufactured from the beginning of production through January 31, 2025, are affected by this software issue. Newer vehicles have already received updated software, which will be installed in the recalled vehicles through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by visiting a dealership. The software update will be provided free of charge, and customers may be eligible for reimbursement for any expenses incurred.
The OTA update is scheduled for February 11, with recall notifications to be sent out on April 3. Owners can also contact Volvo’s customer service department at 1-800-458-1552 or visit Volvo’s recall site and reference recall number R10298 for more information.
This recall marks the first for the EX90, although software problems caused delays in the vehicle’s launch as well as the launch of the Polestar 3, which shares the same SPA2 architecture and is produced at the same South Carolina factory. Initial production of the EX90 also faced software issues, resulting in the SUV being shipped without some promised features.
It is essential for EX90 owners to act promptly upon receiving the recall notification to ensure the safety and proper functioning of their vehicles. Volvo is dedicated to addressing this issue promptly and ensuring the continued satisfaction of its customers.
