The Omoda 9 SHS crossover is the latest Chinese EREV to hit the western market, aiming to make a splash in the fiercely competitive segment with its impressive technology package, more power than a Porsche 911 GT3, and a price tag of €39,900. Launched in 2022 as a luxury electric sub-brand by the Chinese automaker Chery, Omoda is setting its sights on global success, as evidenced by the introduction of the Omoda 9 SHS SUV.
With up to 535 horsepower in the top EU-spec trim, the Omoda 9 SHS boasts more power than many high-performance sports cars, including the Porsche 911 GT3. This power is delivered by a combination of electric motors – one powering the front wheels and two at the rear, propelling the SUV from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds. Under the hood, the SHS model is equipped with a 34.46 kWh battery pack, providing a pure electric range of 145 km and a total combined range of 1,100 km when the 1.5-liter turbocharged ICE unit kicks in.
Designed to be used primarily as an electric vehicle, the Omoda 9 SHS offers fast charging capabilities of up to 65 kW, allowing for quick charging from 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes. The vehicle also features a host of high-tech amenities, including a dual 12.3″ curved screen display, a 540° rear-view camera, and a premium Sony sound system with HD speakers integrated into the Nappa leather headrests of the front seats.
The Omoda executives are confident in the capabilities of the 9 SHS, stating that it represents a significant step forward for the brand in terms of design, engineering, and technology integration. The SUV is currently available for order in the UK and EU, with deliveries expected later this year.
Overall, the Omoda 9 SHS is a standout model in the electric vehicle market, offering impressive performance, range, and luxury features at a competitive price point. Its arrival in the western market underscores the advancements being made in the EV segment, particularly by Chinese manufacturers who are leading the way in terms of innovation and value.
