New 2027 Mazda CX-5 to stick with petrol power

The upcoming 2027 Mazda CX-5 is set to receive a brand new Skyactiv-Z engine, showcasing Mazda’s commitment to offering combustion-powered cars in the future. This new engine is expected to replace the current Skyactiv-X four-cylinder unit found in models such as the CX-5, CX-30, and Mazda 3. Named the Skyactiv-Z, this engine will not only meet the stringent Euro 7 emissions standards but will also be paired with a hybrid system for improved efficiency.

One of the key features of the Skyactiv-Z engine is its simplified design, with fewer engine control units and different control software. This streamlined approach not only aids in development and production but also helps to reduce costs. The new CX-5, featuring the Skyactiv-Z engine, is slated for release in two years, offering drivers a blend of performance and eco-friendliness.

In a strategic move, Mazda has decided to scale back its investment in electrification, reducing spending from ¥2 trillion to around ¥1.5 trillion. Instead of focusing solely on electric architectures and battery management, Mazda has opted for partnerships with other manufacturers like Toyota and China’s Changan. This collaboration has already borne fruit in the form of the 6e electric saloon, with an electric SUV in the works.

Mazda’s CEO, Masahiro Moro, emphasized the importance of cautious and efficient investment in the face of uncertain demand for electric vehicles. By minimizing business risks and improving efficiency, Mazda aims to maintain its international competitiveness as a smaller player in the automotive industry. Looking ahead, Mazda plans to expand its areas of cooperation to drive innovation and stay ahead in the ever-evolving automotive landscape.

With a focus on innovation, efficiency, and strategic partnerships, Mazda is poised to introduce the new Skyactiv-Z engine in the upcoming 2027 CX-5, offering a compelling blend of performance and sustainability for discerning drivers.
