VW ID.4 and Audi Q4 E-Tron recalled for loss of drive power

Volkswagen Group of America is issuing a recall for 13,769 VW and Audi electric vehicles due to a battery issue that affects the charging system for the 12-volt battery, not the high-voltage battery packs. The affected models include the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 and 2024-2025 Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback.

The problem lies with the onboard charger for the 12-volt battery, which may have insufficient protective coating on a printed circuit board, allowing condensation to enter and cause a malfunction. This can lead to the 12-volt battery not recharging properly, resulting in power loss, electronic issues, or the inability to restart the vehicle once it’s shut off.

If a malfunction is detected, the vehicle will provide warnings to the driver and experience reduced driving functions. The remedy for this issue is the replacement of the onboard charger, which will be done free of charge by dealers. Both Audi and Volkswagen will be mailing owner notification letters on April 29.

Owners can also contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or visit the recall website for more information. Audi owners can reach out to their customer service department at 1-800-253-2834 or visit the Audi recall site. The reference numbers for this recall are 93CJ for Volkswagen and 93FR for Audi.

This is the second recent recall affecting the ID.4 and Q4 E-Tron models, following a previous recall for a software error that could prevent gear indicators from displaying correctly. Volkswagen had also recently restarted sales of the ID.4 after a recall for faulty door handles.

It is important for owners of these electric vehicles to take action promptly upon receiving the recall notification to ensure the safety and proper functioning of their vehicles. Volkswagen and Audi are dedicated to addressing and resolving these issues to maintain the quality and reliability of their electric vehicle lineup.
