Ford is issuing a second recall for 10,627 pickup trucks and SUVs due to a trailer-brake software issue that may not have been resolved during a previous recall. The affected models include the 2021-2022 Ford F-150, as well as the 2022 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 heavy-duty pickup trucks. Additionally, the 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup truck, Ford Expedition full-size SUV, and Lincoln Navigator full-size SUV are also part of the recall.
The trailer brake controller software in these vehicles may not properly engage the trailer brakes while towing a trailer with electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes. This can lead to reduced braking performance, potentially increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash, according to the NHTSA. Despite a previous recall intended to fix this issue, it appears that the software update may not have been successful due to a tool error used by dealers. However, Ford has stated that there have been no reported crashes or injuries related to this ongoing problem.
Owners will need to schedule a visit to their local dealership to have the correct software installed free of charge. Additionally, Ford will reimburse any related out-of-pocket expenses incurred by owners during this process. Owner notification letters will be sent out by Ford on Apr. 14, but owners can also contact Ford’s customer service department at 1-866-436-7332 or visit the recall website for more information. The recall reference number is 25S18.
This isn’t the first time Ford has had to address software-related issues in recent months. Just last month, the automaker issued two new recalls for the Maverick due to similar concerns. In January, Ford recalled 272,000 Mavericks and Bronco Sport crossovers for a 12-volt battery issue after a previous recall remedy failed to resolve the problem. It’s crucial for vehicle owners to stay informed about recalls and promptly address any issues to ensure their safety on the road.
