Audi, a renowned German automaker, has been missing a sports car from its lineup since the discontinuation of the TT in 2023 and the R8 in 2024. This marked the first time in decades that Audi didn’t offer a two-door sports car. However, recent reports suggest that Audi is gearing up to make a comeback in the sports car segment.

According to Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, the company is seriously considering the introduction of a new sports car model inspired by the original TT. Döllner emphasized that sports cars are an integral part of Audi’s DNA, and finding the right timing to integrate them into the portfolio is crucial. Despite facing challenges such as layoffs and slow EV demand within the Volkswagen Group, Audi is determined to bring back its iconic sports car models.

The brand’s new design chief, Massimo Frascella, who has a deep admiration for the original TT, is said to have been greatly influenced by the car. Döllner mentioned that Frascella took a day off work to admire the first TT model when it arrived at his local dealership. This passion for the TT has fueled Frascella’s vision for Audi’s future design direction.

However, Döllner emphasized that Audi’s focus is currently on strengthening its core lineup before introducing a new sports car. The brand has recently refreshed its lineup with models like the A5, A6 (both gas and electric variants), Q5, and the electric Q6 E-Tron. While volume sellers are essential for Audi, the brand also recognizes the importance of showcasing its legacy as a pioneer in sporty and innovative cars.

Audi has a rich history of groundbreaking sports cars, from the original Quattro coupe to the iconic TT and the legendary R8. These models have solidified Audi’s reputation as a technology leader and a design powerhouse in the automotive industry. As Audi navigates through the challenges of the evolving automotive landscape, the resurgence of a sports car model could be a defining moment for the brand.

In conclusion, Audi’s potential return to the sports car segment signifies a significant shift in its product strategy. With a strong focus on innovation, design, and performance, Audi is poised to reclaim its position as a leading player in the sports car market. Stay tuned for more updates on Audi’s upcoming sports car model inspired by the original TT.
