CATL, the largest electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer in China, recently announced a collaboration with Nio Inc to develop the world’s largest EV battery swapping network. This partnership aims to standardize EV battery swapping technologies and promote the adoption of battery swapping services across the country.

Nio, a leading battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufacturer, already operates nearly 3,200 battery swapping stations in China and plans to add 2,300 more by the end of the year. The company has established partnerships with several local automakers to standardize swapping technologies and position battery swapping as a viable alternative to traditional charging methods.

Through their collaboration, CATL and Nio aim to drive the formulation and adoption of national standards for battery swapping technology in China. The two companies will leverage their respective strengths in technology, management, platforms, and brand influence to create the largest and most advanced battery swapping service network for passenger vehicles.

CATL will support Nio in expanding its battery swapping network based on its Choco-Swap technical standards. Nio has agreed to adopt these standards in its upcoming models under the Firefly brand. The networks of both companies will operate in parallel, providing EV users with a seamless and efficient swapping experience.

This collaboration signifies a significant step towards advancing EV technology and infrastructure in China. By working together to standardize and promote battery swapping services, CATL and Nio are paving the way for a more sustainable and convenient future for electric vehicles in the country.
