When is a Volkswagen Transporter not really a Volkswagen Transporter?

When Volkswagen teams up with Ford to produce its seventh-generation mid-sized delivery van. This new Transporter has sparked some debate among loyal VW fans, who feel that it’s straying away from the brand’s traditional roots.

The collaboration between Volkswagen and Ford, initiated in 2017, aims to enhance the profitability of their commercial vehicle lineups. Volkswagen takes charge of the small van segment with models like the Caddy, while Ford oversees the mid-sized van category, which includes the Transit Custom and the new Transporter. Both brands emphasize that each vehicle is developed to meet their own standards and criteria while sharing engineering costs.

The new Transporter lineup offers a diverse range of models, including the panel van, crew cab, people mover, and dropside body types. Customers can choose from two wheelbase lengths and two roof heights, as well as diesel, electric, and plug-in hybrid powertrains with various drive layouts.

During the international launch of the new T7 Transporter, we had the opportunity to test drive the diesel Transporter, the battery-powered e-Transporter, and the electric e-Caravelle.

What’s Under the Bonnet?

The new Transporter lineup features a wide range of powertrains, including diesel combustion engines and pure electric variants. The e-Transporter and e-Caravelle offer electric options, with plans for a plug-in hybrid petrol powertrain in the future.

Volkswagen is also working on a smaller capacity battery for the e-Transporter to create a more affordable variant suitable for shorter duty cycles. This new model is expected to join the lineup later in 2025.

How Does the Volkswagen Transporter Drive?

The new Transporter offers a comfortable driving experience, with an elevated position that provides a good view of the road. The diesel engine delivers decent power and refinement, while the electric models offer a smoother and quieter ride. The suspension, steering, and maneuverability make the Transporter suitable for urban deliveries and long-distance travel.

What Do You Get?

The new Transporter emphasizes technology, with standard features like LED headlights, a dual-screen dashboard layout, wireless phone mirroring, and driver assistance systems. The PanAmericana version offers additional styling elements and exclusive interior features.

Is the Volkswagen Transporter Safe?

While the new Transporter has yet to be officially rated by safety authorities, Volkswagen’s track record with other commercial vehicles suggests it will perform well in crash tests. The standard safety equipment includes airbags, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and more.

How Much Does the Volkswagen Transporter Cost to Run?

Volkswagen Australia provides a five-year unlimited-kilometer warranty and roadside assistance for the first year. The electric models come with an eight-year battery warranty. The running costs for the e-Transporter and e-Caravelle include energy consumption figures and driving ranges for both short and long-wheelbase models.

CarExpert’s Take on the Volkswagen Transporter

Despite the mixed reactions from VW enthusiasts, the new Transporter offers a high level of performance and refinement. The electric variants provide ample torque, while the e-Caravelle caters to those looking for a practical alternative to large SUVs.
