BYD is expanding its fleet of car carriers with the upcoming launch of the BYD Changsha, the fifth vessel in its marine fleet and the second car carrier with a capacity of 9,200 vehicles. This new addition is named after BYD’s production base in Changsha, located in Hunan province.

Previously, BYD’s fleet consisted of four vessels: BYD Explorer No.1, BYD Hefei, BYD Changzhou, and BYD Shenzhen. BYD Explorer No.1 was the first vessel in the fleet, chartered to BYD with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles. It entered service in January 2024. BYD Hefei, the first car carrier owned by BYD, has the same capacity as BYD Explorer No.1 and set sail on its maiden voyage in January 2025, carrying about 5,000 NEVs to Europe.

BYD Changzhou, the second vessel named after a production base, was launched in October 2024 with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles. It began operations in December 2024, transporting 5,000 NEVs to Europe on its maiden voyage. BYD Shenzhen, the world’s largest automotive ro-ro ship with a capacity of 9,200 vehicles, completed its undocking process on January 15.

As the largest NEV maker in China, BYD sold over 4 million NEVs in 2024, including 417,204 units in overseas markets. In the first two months of 2025, BYD sold 133,361 NEVs internationally, marking a 124.27 percent year-on-year increase and contributing 21.39 percent to the company’s total NEV sales during that period.

The arrival of the BYD Changsha car carrier signifies BYD’s commitment to expanding its marine fleet capacity and meeting the growing demand for its electric vehicles both domestically and internationally. Stay tuned for more updates on BYD’s innovative ventures in the NEV industry.
