Why electric propulsion is the perfect fit for Rolls-Royce

Electric car batteries have often been criticized for being too big, heavy, expensive, and slow to charge. These accusations are not entirely unfounded, especially when considering the high standards set by luxury car manufacturers like Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce has always been synonymous with perfection, with founder Sir Henry Royce famously stating, “Strive for perfection in everything you do.” Even a century later, Rolls-Royce cars are still renowned for their impeccable design, top-quality materials, and exquisite craftsmanship.

It’s interesting to note that the battery technology deemed inadequate for regular use is considered more than sufficient for some of the most luxurious and expensive production cars in the world. Take the new Spectre Black Badge, a £400,000 super-luxury EV coupe with exceptional performance. Despite the compromised battery technology, its impact is minimal in this context.

The weight of the batteries is inconsequential in a car like the Spectre, considering the V12-powered Ghost already weighs two and a half tonnes. Additionally, the limited seating capacity and lack of towing capabilities make the extra weight negligible. The charging speed may not be as fast as some would prefer, but Spectre owners typically have access to three-phase charging at home and multiple other vehicles for their convenience.

Furthermore, the expensive nature of batteries is a non-issue for Spectre owners, who are willing to pay a premium for the luxury and performance that Rolls-Royce offers. Despite only achieving 2.6 miles per kWh and having costly electrical components, the Spectre Black Badge remains perfectly suited for a Rolls-Royce.

On the contrary, fitting similar battery technology into smaller vehicles like superminis poses more challenges, akin to trying to install a Rolls-Royce V12 engine into a Nissan Micra.

In conclusion, while electric car batteries may have their limitations, luxury car manufacturers like Rolls-Royce have found ways to work around these issues and deliver exceptional vehicles that meet the high standards expected from the brand. The integration of advanced battery technology into luxury cars like the Spectre Black Badge showcases the innovation and adaptability of the automotive industry.
