Hydrogen Fuel Stations Facing Challenges in 2021
This year has not started off well for the potential of hydrogen as a future fuel for cars. In a series of setbacks, hydrogen companies are facing challenges that are impacting the availability of fuel stations for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
One significant blow came from Germany, where H2 Mobility announced in March that it would be closing 22 fuel stations that primarily catered to cars. This decision was part of a strategic shift towards focusing more on goods vehicles, signaling a change in direction for the company.
Meanwhile, in California, Shell is reportedly planning to shut down 10 out of its 11 hydrogen fuel stations. This comes as a surprise, especially after the initial announcement that Shell would be opening 48 fuel stations in the state. The reduction in fuel station availability will undoubtedly have an impact on drivers of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the region.
For US Toyota Mirai owners, the news of fuel station closures adds to their existing challenges. With filling stations shutting down across the country and prices for hydrogen fuel remaining high, the future of hydrogen as a viable fuel option for cars is uncertain.
