BYD to overtake Tesla as global BEV leader for 1st time in 2025, says Counterpoint

Market researcher Counterpoint Research recently predicted that BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) would surpass Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) to become the global leader in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in 2025. This forecast comes after BYD’s passenger BEV sales outpaced Tesla’s for two consecutive quarters.

Counterpoint highlighted BYD’s tech leadership, vertically integrated production model, and strong government support as key factors driving its success. The market researcher emphasized BYD’s 1,000-kW ultra-fast charging technology and 10C charging rate batteries, which have set new industry benchmarks. In contrast, Tesla is facing challenges, including softening sales in major markets due to CEO Elon Musk’s political stance and geopolitical tensions affecting its supply chain.

Despite Tesla’s dominance in the global BEV market in 2024, Counterpoint’s new forecast expects BYD to overtake Tesla in 2025 with a 15.7 percent market share. This shift is attributed to BYD’s scale, innovation, and government support, which have propelled the company to the forefront of the industry.

Tesla recently reported lower-than-expected global deliveries for the first quarter of 2025, further highlighting the challenges the company is facing. In contrast, BYD’s strong performance in passenger BEV sales indicates its growing competitiveness in the market.

Overall, Counterpoint’s forecast underscores BYD’s potential to lead the global BEV market in 2025 and beyond. With a focus on technology, innovation, and government support, BYD is poised to become a major player in the electric vehicle industry, challenging Tesla’s long-standing dominance.
