Daimler Buses recently conducted the first customer test drive of its latest innovation, the Mercedes-Benz eIntouro, a battery-electric intercity bus. The test drive took place in early April 2025, where the near-production prototype covered a distance of approximately 380km on the EUROBUS Rustexpress route from Bassersdorf in Switzerland to Europa-Park in Rust, Germany, and back.
Equipped with two high-voltage batteries with a total capacity of 414kWh, the eIntouro prototype demonstrated its capability to complete the journey regardless of weather conditions or onboard climate control usage. The successful test drive paves the way for Daimler Buses to commence production of the eIntouro in 2026, with plans to deploy one of the initial series vehicles on the Rustexpress line.
The eIntouro is based on the diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Intouro bus, offering a purely battery-electric drive for interurban routes, school buses, and short excursions. With seating for 50 to 63 passengers, the eIntouro and its longer variant, the eIntouro M, feature remote software updates to streamline maintenance processes and enhance operational efficiency.
Mirko Sgodda, Head of Marketing, Sales, and Customer Services at Daimler Buses, emphasized the rigorous testing phase that all newly developed vehicles undergo before market launch. The collaboration with EUROBUS, a leading Swiss bus travel company, allowed the eIntouro to showcase its performance and reliability in real customer applications.
In a strategic move to bolster its position in the electric mobility sector, Daimler Buses acquired a 49% stake in Sinos, a German software solutions provider specializing in electrified city bus fleets. Sinos’ expertise in intelligent charging management systems aligns with Daimler Buses’ commitment to advancing sustainable transportation solutions.
