Hon Hai promotes BEV contract assembly, licensing business in Japan

Hon Hai Precision Industry Company Ltd, popularly known as Foxconn, made headlines in the automotive industry with its recent foray into battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The Taiwanese company, primarily known for its role as an Apple iPhone subcontractor, showcased its ambitions in the BEV sector at a press conference held in Tokyo, Japan. The event, spearheaded by Juni Seki, Hon Hai’s chief strategy officer for BEVs and former Nissan Motor executive, aimed to attract potential partners in Japan for its BEV contract manufacturing and technology licensing services.

With a focus on expanding its automotive customer base beyond Taiwan, which currently includes Luxgen Motor Company and a few commercial vehicle customers, Hon Hai has developed the MIH (Mobility in Harmony) BEV platform through its Foxtron Technologies Company BEV unit. This platform is designed to offer automakers a cost-effective and rapid entry into the BEV market, supported by a well-established supply chain.

In a significant development, Hon Hai recently announced a partnership with Mitsubishi Motors to produce a BEV model in Taiwan starting next year, targeting both domestic and Asia-Pacific markets. The company is also eyeing the Japanese market, with plans to introduce multiple BEVs by 2027. Juni Seki affirmed that discussions with potential Japanese partners are already underway, with the possibility of setting up new manufacturing facilities in Japan.

Recognizing the lag in zero-emission vehicle adoption among Japanese automakers, Hon Hai sees an opportunity to assist smaller and mid-sized companies in accelerating their BEV development. This includes potential collaborations with established players like Nissan, especially in the wake of failed merger talks with Honda.

Overall, Hon Hai’s strategic shift towards BEVs signifies a significant milestone in the company’s evolution beyond its traditional electronics manufacturing roots. By leveraging its expertise, supply chain capabilities, and partnerships, Hon Hai is poised to make a mark in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market. Stay tuned for more updates on Hon Hai’s advancements in the automotive industry.
