Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 2025 long-term test

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 has managed to make a lasting impression on us during our long-term test drive. This old-school coupé has definitely wormed its way under our skin, and here’s why.

Mercedes has undergone some significant changes in its model range in recent years, and the CLE is a prime example of this evolution. This model effectively replaced the C-Class and E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, offering a unique blend of size, powertrain options, and pricing.

The CLE 53, sitting atop the range, offers a powerful performance with its 443bhp and 413lb ft of torque from just 2200rpm. This puts it in competition with the likes of the BMW M4, although it falls somewhere between the C-Class and E-Class in terms of size and positioning.

Our test car, priced at over £80,000 in Night Edition Premium Plus trim, comes loaded with features such as rear-wheel steering, adaptive sports suspension, MBUX infotainment system, and active safety features. The optional Pro Performance Package adds even more performance-oriented elements like bucket seats, race mode, and carbon fiber trim.

During our time with the CLE 53, we found it to be a head-turner, with strangers often complimenting its looks and presence on the road. The powerful engine, comfortable interior, and dynamic driving experience all contributed to making this car stand out in the crowd.

However, there were some challenges to overcome, such as getting used to the driving position, navigating the complex array of driving modes, and dealing with the car’s sheer size on the road. Despite these initial hurdles, once we found the right settings and driving mode, the CLE 53 truly came alive on the road.

The engine, a 3.0-litre mild-hybrid turbo straight six, proved to be a highlight of the car, offering a blend of performance and refinement that impressed us on every drive. The overall experience of driving the CLE 53 was a mix of muscle car power and luxurious comfort, making it a unique and enjoyable car to drive.

In conclusion, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 has won us over with its combination of style, performance, and luxury. It may have taken some time to fully appreciate all that this car has to offer, but once we did, it became clear that the CLE 53 is a special and standout model in the Mercedes lineup.
