Jaecoo 7: A Review of the Petrol-Electric Powertrain

When it comes to the Jaecoo 7’s petrol-electric powertrain, there are several strengths worth mentioning. The mechanical isolation is commendable, providing a smooth and strong accelerator response. The urban efficiency of the vehicle is also noteworthy, especially at low speeds where it behaves more like a series-hybrid arrangement, running on electric power and only engaging the combustion engine when necessary.

During our acceleration tests, the Jaecoo 7 proved to have plenty of performance even without relying solely on the combustion engine. The car accelerated from 0 to 62mph in 7.7 seconds, surpassing the manufacturer’s claims. It maintained a sense of refinement even at higher speeds, with the combustion engine seamlessly kicking in above 50mph.

The Jaecoo 7 offers a variety of driving modes to choose from, perhaps more than necessary. Drivers can opt for EV or HEV modes, with the latter offering Initial, Smart, and Forced hybrid running options. The car typically maintains a baseline battery charge of around 15% to 20%, limiting access to the remaining electric range indicated on the instrument panel. An EV+ mode is available for emergencies, but its usage is discouraged.

Overall, the Jaecoo 7’s drivability is hindered by the complexity of its driving modes. Simplifying the system and allowing drivers full access to the available electric range would greatly improve the user experience. With some adjustments, the Jaecoo 7 could offer a more user-friendly and efficient driving experience for its owners.

This review of the Jaecoo 7’s petrol-electric powertrain highlights the car’s performance, efficiency, and driving modes. Despite some complexities, the vehicle shows promise in delivering a smooth and refined driving experience.
