General Motors (GM) has made it clear that despite the uncertainty surrounding tariffs and union jobs, they have no plans to move production of their Ultium-based electric vehicles (EVs) from Mexico to the US.
Since last year, GM has been exclusively producing electric cars at its plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. This move has not only boosted the local economy but has also created around 5,000 new jobs in the area. According to economist Raquel Buenrostro, who currently serves as Mexico’s Secretary of Anti-Corruption and Good Government, the electric cars produced in Mexico, including the popular Chevy Equinox EV and Honda’s Prologue, have been incredibly successful in their respective segments.
GM seems to be doubling down on its commitment to Mexico, with no intentions of relocating its assembly lines out of the country. Adrián Enciso, the director of GM de México’s EV operations, stated that there are no plans to halt or move production of any EV models made in Mexico. Additionally, there is a possibility of introducing new models, such as the 2026 Chevy Spark, to be built in Mexico as well.
While proposed tariffs could potentially raise GM’s costs to produce electric cars in Mexico by up to $4,300 per vehicle, the company may continue to build EVs in Mexico and distribute them in other markets like Canada and Central and South America. The new Spark model, in particular, is targeted towards these regions.
Despite the potential financial impact of the tariffs, GM’s financial stability allows them to absorb these costs. The company has demonstrated a strong commitment to its EV production in Mexico and is focused on delivering high-quality electric vehicles to consumers globally.
