Exploring the Future of Apple CarPlay

For those with cars that only support wireless connections or prefer not to use a cable, connecting to Apple CarPlay can be a bit more complex. The process varies depending on the car model, with some requiring an initial wired connection before allowing wireless connections in the future. Others act as Wi-Fi hotspots for seamless wireless connectivity.

Latest Updates on Apple CarPlay

Apple regularly updates CarPlay, with the most recent release in March 2025 as part of the iOS 18.4 software update. This update introduced additional icons for models with larger infotainment screens and an integrated electric vehicle routing system in Apple Maps.

Anticipation is high for ‘CarPlay 2’, announced by Apple in 2022. This new version is expected to offer enhanced features, potentially taking over all digital screens in the vehicle, including the driver’s display. Imagine driving with a custom Apple-designed dashboard, complete with personalized speedometers and controls for climate, radio, and seat heating.

Expected Release Date

Initially slated for a launch by the end of 2023, Apple pushed back the release date to the end of 2024. Currently, there is no confirmed launch date for the new Apple CarPlay system, leaving enthusiasts eagerly awaiting its arrival.

While Aston Martin and Porsche were rumored to receive the update first, the rollout has yet to materialize.

Supported Apps on Apple CarPlay

Apple CarPlay supports a selection of apps that display on your car’s screen when connected. While not all apps are compatible, here are some favorites that seamlessly integrate with CarPlay:
