ID. Buzz recall: VW’s third-row bench is too big for its own good

Volkswagen of America has issued a recall for nearly 5,700 2025 VW ID. Buzz vans due to a rather unusual reason – the third-row bench seat is deemed too spacious by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The issue arises from the fact that the bench is wide enough for three passengers, but it is only equipped with two seat belts, which violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208 regarding occupant crash protection.

To rectify this safety concern, Volkswagen will be installing “fixed unpadded trim parts” at no cost to the owners. This adjustment will effectively reduce the usable width of the seat, ensuring that only two passengers can occupy the third row. The company is taking proactive measures to address the issue and enhance the safety of the vehicle.

According to Volkswagen, there have been no reported safety incidents related to the extra-wide third-row bench seat. However, the recall serves as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential risks associated with the mismatch between seating capacity and seat belt availability.

Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to receive notification letters starting June 20, 2025, informing them of the recall and the necessary steps to have the issue resolved. It is important for all affected owners to follow the instructions provided by Volkswagen to ensure the safety of their passengers.

In the meantime, if you are considering making your home more resilient to power outages, going solar and adding a battery storage system could be a viable solution. EnergySage, a trusted and reliable platform, can help you find competitive pricing from pre-vetted solar installers in your area. By going solar, you can save money and contribute to a more sustainable future.
