BYD Breaks Ground on First EV Plant in Cambodia
BYD, a leading new energy vehicle manufacturer, recently marked a historic moment with the groundbreaking ceremony for its passenger vehicle plant in Cambodia. This plant, the first of its kind in the country, signifies the beginning of BYD Auto’s localized operations in Cambodia. Not only will it cater to the local market, but it will also serve as an export hub to other Southeast Asian nations, positioning it as BYD’s second production base in the region after its Thailand facility.
Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, revealed that the BYD Cambodia passenger vehicle plant will have an annual production capacity of 10,000 units and is set to start production in the fourth quarter of this year. By the end of the year, BYD plans to establish 10 brand dealerships in Cambodia. The flagship store on Phnom Penh’s Hun Sen Boulevard, spanning 15,000 square meters, will be the largest automotive dealership in the country.
BYD has experienced a surge in popularity in the Cambodian market, with a 521% year-on-year increase in orders during the first quarter of this year. The brand emerged as the top-selling automotive brand at the Phnom Penh White Palace Auto Show, capturing 24% of total orders.
This increase in sales can be attributed to supportive local policies. The Cambodian government sees BYD’s investment as a key step towards economic diversification and has introduced the “Electric Vehicle Sector Development Policy (2024-2030)” to provide incentives such as tax exemptions and infrastructure support for charging stations. The goal is to have 30,000 EVs on the road by 2030. The establishment of the plant is expected to create 300 jobs and promote the training of local technical talent.
