Mercedes CLA: game-changing 484-mile EV priced from £45k

Mercedes-Benz has taken a significant step forward with the new CLA EV, implementing a range of design and engineering changes to enhance its efficiency and performance. One of the most noticeable differences is the positioning of the wheels, which are set further in-board of the arches compared to its predecessor. This design choice, along with small inlets on the front bumper and corresponding outlets at the rear, helps guide the flow of air around the vehicle, resulting in a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.21.

The CLA EV is powered by a rear-mounted permanent magnet motor, which is paired with a silicon-carbide inverter for greater output in a smaller package. The motor’s torque density is boosted by using magnets in a double-V formation, concentrating their field for optimal performance. Additionally, the motor features a two-speed gearbox similar to the one found in the Porsche Taycan, with a short first ratio for quick acceleration and a longer second ratio for efficient cruising.

The powertrain of the CLA 250+ delivers 268bhp, allowing it to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 6.7 seconds. For even more power, the CLA 350 4Matic with EQ Technology adds a 107bhp motor on the front axle, resulting in a combined output of 349bhp and a quicker 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds. This additional motor can be decoupled when not needed, reducing energy losses and allowing the four-wheel-drive CLA EV to achieve an impressive range of 478 miles per charge.

To further enhance efficiency, the CLA EV relies primarily on regenerative braking, which can provide up to 200kW of stopping power while also helping to keep the battery topped up. With these advancements in design and engineering, the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV is a standout electric vehicle that combines performance and efficiency in a stylish package.
