Stellantis plans for 200 job cuts

Stellantis, the automotive giant, is reportedly planning to introduce up to 200 voluntary redundancies at its Termoli plant in central Italy. This decision, made in collaboration with trade unions, is part of Stellantis’ larger strategy to revamp its workforce in Italy, as reported by Reuters.

The move follows similar announcements for other Italian plants, with the aim of reducing the workforce by up to 1,000 employees. Despite these reductions, Stellantis has also initiated hiring initiatives, with approximately 300 new employees joining in Turin and Atessa, Italy.

Currently, Stellantis employs fewer than 40,000 staff in Italy, a significant decline from 55,000 in early 2021 following the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot maker PSA. The company has reiterated that Italy remains at the core of its strategies.

Last December, Stellantis presented a plan to the Italian government to rejuvenate production in the country, with anticipated benefits to materialize next year. In March, the Termoli plant commenced preparations for a production line dedicated to electric dual clutch transmission (eDCT) gearboxes for hybrid vehicles, making it the third Stellantis production hub alongside Mirafiori in Turin and Metz in France.

Termoli has also been selected by the Stellantis-led joint venture ACC for the construction of EV battery plants in Europe. However, plans for gigafactories in Italy and Germany were put on hold due to sluggish market demand for electric vehicles.

In April, Stellantis announced temporary layoffs of 900 hourly workers across its five US facilities. This decision was influenced by newly imposed tariffs, which escalated the cost of auto imports and disrupted production across North America. Additionally, Stellantis has withdrawn its 2025 financial outlook due to tariff concerns, engaging with officials to address trade policy effects. The company witnessed a 14% decrease in Q1 net revenues, down to €35.8bn year-over-year.

As Stellantis navigates through workforce adjustments and market challenges, it continues to focus on innovation and sustainability. The automotive industry landscape is evolving rapidly, and Stellantis is adapting to ensure its long-term success and growth.

Overall, Stellantis remains committed to its operations in Italy and around the world, striving to remain at the forefront of automotive innovation and excellence.
