Proton Holdings Bhd, Malaysia’s first national car company, has exciting plans in store for this year. The company recently announced its intention to launch a second battery electric vehicle (BEV) model, the e.MAS 5 sub-compact hatchback. The new model was unveiled at the Malaysia Auto Show 2025, where attendees got a sneak peek at what’s to come.
Salawati Mohd Yusoff, Proton’s chief branding officer at Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net), shared that the e.MAS 5 is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2025. Pro-Net, established in 2022 to oversee Proton’s electric vehicle program, is working diligently to bring this new B-segment BEV to the market. The e.MAS 5 is expected to be based on Zhejiang Geely Holding Group’s Xingyuan model, a popular choice known for its efficiency and performance.
Positioned below the e.MAS 7, a C-segment SUV that has been well-received in the market, the e.MAS 5 aims to offer a more affordable option for consumers interested in electric vehicles. With a price point above MYR100,000 (US$23,000), Proton is targeting a competitive edge by pricing the e.MAS 5 slightly lower than equivalent models available. The new BEV will debut in two variants – the Prime model with a range of 345 km and the Premium model with a range of 410 km, catering to different consumer needs and preferences.
Proton’s foray into the electric vehicle market marks a significant step towards sustainability and innovation in the automotive industry. By introducing affordable and efficient BEV models, the company is not only meeting consumer demand but also contributing to a greener and more eco-friendly future. Stay tuned for more updates on the e.MAS 5 as Proton gears up for its launch later this year.
