New Volkswagen T-Roc to introduce Toyota-style hybrid powertrain

Volkswagen to Unveil Second Generation T-Roc with New Full-Hybrid Powertrain

Volkswagen is set to reveal the highly anticipated second generation of its popular T-Roc in August. This new model will be the first in the Volkswagen lineup to utilize a new full-hybrid powertrain, which will also be featured in upcoming models such as the Golf and Tiguan.

The upcoming T-Roc will mark Volkswagen’s final new model with a combustion powertrain, as the company gears up to transition to all-electric vehicles in Europe within the next decade. The new HEV (hybrid electric) powertrain in the T-Roc will operate similarly to systems used by Toyota, allowing for seamless switching between petrol engine, electric motor, or a combination of both for optimal performance.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer explained the decision to introduce this new hybrid system, stating, “We needed to do it anyway, because South America has a need for an HEV drivetrain – and the T-Roc is built in South America for South America, and also in China.” He also highlighted the increasing demand for HEV technology in regions like the US, where it has become a significant trend amidst a slowdown in battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Following the debut of the new T-Roc, Volkswagen plans to evaluate the potential for integrating the HEV system into other models in their lineup. While not every vehicle on the MQB architecture will receive this technology, the Golf and Tiguan are slated to incorporate the hybrid powertrain within the next two years.

Enthusiasts can expect the grand unveiling of the new T-Roc at a dedicated event in August, with a public debut scheduled for the Munich Motor Show the following month. Speculation is also rife regarding Volkswagen’s plans to showcase the ID 2X baby SUV at the same event, further solidifying the brand’s commitment to electrification and innovative technologies.
