Innovative In-Car Audio Technology: Continental’s Ac2ated Sound Display

In-car audio systems have evolved beyond just playing music, now also serving as a means of relaying important information to vehicle occupants. Continental, in collaboration with audio specialist Sennheiser, has introduced a groundbreaking concept that combines instrument display with sound transmission capabilities.

The Ac2ated Sound Technology developed by Continental eliminates the need for traditional speakers, instead utilizing actuators to turn the display surface into a sound chamber. These actuators generate audible vibrations in the glass, allowing for the transmission of various sounds, including speech, in exceptional quality.

One of the key advantages of this integrated system is ‘acoustic localization’. By directing sound towards specific areas on the display, such as instrument clusters, drivers are naturally drawn to important alerts or messages, optimizing attention and focus.

Continental’s team of experts in vehicle acoustics and psychoacoustics have designed this technology to enhance the overall driving experience by seamlessly integrating audio and visual elements. Beyond instrument displays, the actuator technology can be incorporated into various flat components throughout the car’s interior, potentially eliminating the need for conventional speakers.

By replacing traditional speakers with actuators in door trims, headrests, and other interior components, significant weight and space savings can be achieved. With a potential weight reduction of up to 40kg and a 90% decrease in required space, this innovative system offers both aesthetic and practical benefits.

In the past, Continental showcased a similar system, known as the Speakerless Immersive Sound system, which focused more on audio quality than display integration. By integrating Sennheiser’s Ambeo 3D audio technology, the original Ac2ated system was able to deliver a truly immersive sound experience.

With the evolution of in-car audio technology, Continental’s Ac2ated Sound Display represents a major leap forward in audio-visual integration within the automotive industry. As car manufacturers continue to prioritize innovation and efficiency, this cutting-edge technology is poised to revolutionize the in-car audio experience.
