New Renault 4 goes 4×4 with rugged twin-motor concept

Renault has recently teased the possibility of introducing a 4×4 variant of its new 4 crossover with the unveiling of the Savane concept. This off-road-influenced concept pays homage to the adventure-themed variant of the original Renault 4, featuring a higher ride height, utility-style wheels with Goodyear tires, and ‘deep brown’ textile fabrics in the interior. The Savane also boasts widened tracks and black body cladding to emphasize its enhanced off-road capabilities.

The most significant difference between the Savane concept and the standard front-wheel-drive model is the addition of a second motor on the rear axle, providing permanent four-wheel drive. While Renault has not released specific technical details, the front-wheel-drive version of the car offers either a 118bhp or 148bhp motor. If the 4×4 variant includes another motor at the back, it could potentially deliver around 300bhp, placing it in a similar performance bracket as the Skoda Elroq vRS.

Although Renault has not officially confirmed plans for a production 4×4 model, the Savane concept demonstrates that the Ampr Small architecture can accommodate a dual-motor setup, hinting at the potential for a B-segment electric vehicle with four-wheel drive. A Renault spokesperson mentioned that the company is currently exploring the technical feasibility and financial viability of such a model, without confirming its imminent arrival.

If the 4 4×4 does make it to the market, it would join the ranks of the smallest electric cars available with a twin-motor powertrain. With the potential to offer enhanced off-road capabilities and all-weather performance, the Renault 4 4×4 could appeal to drivers seeking a compact yet versatile electric vehicle option. Stay tuned for further updates on the development of this exciting concept.
