Porsche Intensifies Testing of 718 Cayman EV

Porsche is ramping up testing of its highly anticipated 718 Cayman EV as it prepares to launch its first electric sports cars next year. The German automaker is set to unveil the 718 Boxster EV roadster first, followed by the Cayman coupé six months later.

The debut of the 718 Boxster EV is expected in early 2026, with recent sightings of Boxster mules undergoing testing indicating that the launch is imminent. The latest Cayman prototype has also been spotted undergoing rigorous testing on the track at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, offering a clear glimpse of the new two-seat EV’s design.

While the Cayman EV remains similar in size and styling to its internal combustion engine counterpart, there are noticeable changes such as new lights, a more angular bonnet inspired by the Taycan electric saloon, wider air intakes for improved brake cooling, and a probable dual-motor powertrain.

Both the Cayman and Boxster EVs are built on a bespoke electric sports car platform to ensure they deliver a true sports car driving experience. Porsche’s R&D chief, Michael Steiner, has emphasized the importance of maintaining a light and nimble feel by positioning the battery pack behind the driver, similar to a mid-engined ICE car setup, to optimize balance and lower the driving position.

While official performance figures have not been released, the motors for the Cayman and Boxster EVs are expected to be sourced from the Taycan lineup, which offers outputs ranging from 402bhp to 1019bhp.
