The Jaecoo J7 is a new mid-size SUV that embodies the design philosophy of “From Classic, Beyond Classic”. This SUV aims to combine rugged off-road style with refined urban sophistication, and the SHS version, a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) finished in Lunar Silver, perfectly strikes that balance.

Although Jaecoo is a newcomer to the Australian market, it is part of Chery, China’s largest vehicle exporter, known for offering Omoda and Tiggo models. The J7 is positioned as a more premium alternative, with prices ranging from $34,990 drive-away for the petrol variant to $47,990 for the SHS Summit.

Under the bonnet of the J7 SHS is Jaecoo’s Super Hybrid System, which offers great fuel efficiency and a taste of electric driving without fully committing to an EV. With a claimed electric-only range of up to 106km and a WLTP-rated combined range of over 1200km, this SUV is suitable for daily commutes and long-distance touring.

The J7 SHS combines a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 150kW electric motor and an 18.3kWh battery, delivering smooth transitions between electric and petrol power. While currently front-wheel drive, an all-wheel drive version is reportedly in the works.

Performance-wise, the J7 SHS can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds, with fuel consumption rated at just 1.0L/100km. Charging options include AC charging at up to 6.6kW and DC fast-charging at up to 40kW.

Inside, the J7 SHS features a 14.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and comfortable synthetic leather-trimmed seats. The SUV can comfortably seat five adults, with the rear seats folding flat to expand cargo space.

Priced at $47,990 drive-away, the J7 SHS Summit offers a competitive price point for a plug-in hybrid medium SUV. Jaecoo backs its models with an eight-year warranty, unlimited-kilometre warranty for the entire vehicle, including the high-voltage battery, roadside assistance, and a capped-price service program.

In conclusion, the Jaecoo J7 SHS provides a solid hybrid capability, a feature-packed interior, and a super affordable way to enter the plug-in hybrid SUV market. With a five-star ANCAP safety rating and advanced driver assistance aids, this SUV is a safe, efficient, and high-tech option for families looking for a budget-friendly vehicle.
