DS No8: The Electric Flagship with Potential for Hybrid Powertrain Option
DS has introduced its new electric-only flagship, the No8 coupé-SUV, which could potentially offer a hybrid powertrain option in the future if market demand calls for it. The No8 stands out as the sole vehicle based on Stellantis’s new STLA Medium architecture that is exclusively electric-powered within the group’s 14-brand lineup.
While the No8 currently remains solely electric, DS is open to the possibility of introducing a combustion option if necessary. DS future products boss, Cyprien Laurentie, mentioned that although it’s technically feasible, the focus is on convincing consumers of the benefits of a pure-electric offering in this segment.
Laurentie emphasized the No8’s impressive 466-mile maximum range, stating that it offers a compelling option without compromising on performance or convenience. He highlighted its suitability for commuting and long-distance travel, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of drivers.
Addressing potential EV skeptics, Laurentie pointed out that many have never experienced an electric car firsthand and stressed the importance of providing opportunities for them to test drive electric vehicles. DS is committed to monitoring market trends closely and adapting the No8’s powertrain options accordingly to meet consumer preferences.
The No8 shares its platform with other models like the Citroën C5 Aircross, Peugeot 3008, and Vauxhall Grandland, which offer mild-hybrid petrol power or plug-in hybrid systems with an electric-only range of around 50 miles. This shared platform allows for flexibility in powertrain options and aligns with the group’s commitment to offering a diverse range of environmentally friendly vehicles.
Similar to other brands within the Stellantis group, DS may consider introducing ICE options for the No8 in the future to broaden its appeal and attract a wider audience. By staying attuned to market demands and consumer preferences, DS remains poised to adapt and evolve the No8 to meet evolving automotive trends.
