Tesla primes updates for hot Model S Plaid and Model Y Performance

Tesla is gearing up to release updated versions of its popular Model S Plaid and Model Y Performance models in order to compete with new electric vehicle offerings from European rivals. The vehicles have been seen testing at the Nürburgring, indicating that their launches are imminent.

The Model S Plaid, which currently boasts an impressive 1020bhp, was spotted sporting light camouflage during testing. The changes include a refreshed front and rear end design aimed at improving aerodynamics. The front fascia now features more angular air ducts, while the rear diffuser has been updated to reduce lift at high speeds. Additionally, a new camera has been added to enhance the advanced driver assistance systems.

While Tesla has not confirmed any significant upgrades under the hood, the brand’s recent launches suggest potential improvements. The Cybertruck, for example, utilizes 800V electrical systems for faster charging speeds compared to the 400V systems found in other Tesla models.

The decision to test the Plaid at the Nürburgring could indicate Tesla’s intention to reclaim its production EV lap record at the Nordschleife, which was recently taken by the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. Closing the 18-second gap between the two vehicles would likely require substantial modifications such as increased power or a new chassis package.

In a market increasingly crowded with high-performance electric vehicles, Tesla faces stiff competition from the likes of Mercedes-AMG and Lucid Motors. Both manufacturers are set to launch super-saloons with over 1000bhp, posing a challenge to Tesla’s dominance in the segment.

As Tesla continues to innovate and refine its offerings, the upcoming releases of the updated Model S Plaid and Model Y Performance demonstrate the brand’s commitment to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting new models from Tesla.
